My Dear, I love you.
- Jan 23, 2017
Roses, chocolate and teddy bears all tied up in ribbon and bows - Valentine’s Day must be right around the corner. It’s always appealing to find something sparkly, fuzzy or beautiful, put it in a box and give it to your beloved then simply accept the following kisses, hugs and ‘thank yous’ that follow.
But this year, we resolved to show more love - in new ways - and make deeper connections beyond simple gifts in heart-shaped boxes.
Sounds easy enough, right? Yeah… Didn’t think so. Your love might be the stuff of fairytales, but if you still need a bit of inspiration, here are our favorite confessions of love….
NAPOLEON BONAPARTE TO JOSEPHINE DU BEAUHARNAIS
Since I left you, I have been constantly depressed. My happiness is to be near you. Incessantly I live over in my memory your caresses, your tears, your affectionate solicitude. The charms of the incomparable Josephine kindle continually a burning and a glowing flame in my heart…. I thought that I loved you months ago, but since my separation from you I feel that I love you a thousand fold more. Each day since I knew you, have I adored you more and more.
OSCAR WILDE TO LORD ALFRED DOUGLAS
My Own Boy,
Your sonnet is quite lovely, and it is a marvel that hose red-roseleaf lips of yours should be made no less for the madness of music and song than for the madness of kissing. Your slim gilt soul walks between passion and poetry. I know Hyacinthus, whom Apollo loved so madly, was you in Greek days. Why are you alone in London, and when do you go to Salisbury? Do go there to cool your hands in the grey twilight of Gothic things, and come here whenever you like. It is a lovely place and lacks only you; but go to Salisbury first.
Always, with undying love,
ABIGAIL ADAMS TO JOHN ADAMS
Should I draw you the picture of my Heart, it would be what I hope you would Love; tho it contained nothing new; the early possession you obtained there; and the absolute power you have ever maintained over it; leaves not the smallest space unoccupied. I look back to the early days of our acquaintance; and Friendship, as to the days of Love and Innocence; and with an indescribable pleasure I have seen near a score of years roll over our Heads, with an affection heightened and improved by time — nor have the dreary years of absence in the smallest degree effaced from my mind the Image of the dear untitled man to whom I gave my Heart.
NOW IT'S YOUR TURN....
